Who wouldn’t love a day spent outside playing cornhole and relaxing with friends and family? Fresh air, physical activity, and good company are reasons enough to grab the cornhole boards and bags, but did you know there are direct links to playing cornhole and improving your mental health? Read on and be prepared to love playing cornhole more than ever.

Movement and the Mind

Throwing, bending, walking and standing are ways in which playing cornhole has your body moving. It may not feel like a workout, but for your brain, it’s a marathon of activity.

Studies show that physical activity helps major brain functions to stay in shape. Movements require balance, focus, and attention, and your brain is hard at work making it all come together. Something as simple as throwing a bean bag can have your brain working its hardest to make sure every toss is seamless, coordinating sight and muscle to make it happen. And just like muscles in your arms, your brain needs this workout to stay in the beast shape.

Fresh Air and Focus

Playing an afternoon game of cornhole is just as refreshing to your mind as it is to your body. And if you have ever wondered why you sleep so well after a day outside, you can now blame it on your brain.

Fresh air, sunshine, shade and breezes contribute to your mental health in various ways, sharpening the processes of your brain. The brain needs at least 20% of the oxygen you take in; the more fresh air, the more you are helping your brain. Improved brain function can help you to think and focus more sharply. The more oxygen the brain receives, the more energy you’ll have. Add the bonus of increased energy due to better oxygen intake and a simple game of cornhole has your brain buzzing with activity.

Social

No matter who you choose to play with, spending time with friends, family or co-workers has major benefits for your brain.

Social interaction, weather for fun or competition, allows your brain to create a web of positive thoughts. Playing with family strengthens bonds, and provides comfort and expression. A game with friends reinforces social skills, making your brain use everything from face recognition to memory. Even playing with strangers helps your overall mental health: introductions, interactions and chemistry all play a role in your brain’s need to socialize, organize, and stabilize thoughts.

Whether you play cornhole for fun, competition, or physical activity, you are helping improve your brain function and mental health. Because cornhole is easy to setup, learn and play, there is little reason not to get out and take advantage of these benefits; all while having fun and spending time with friends or family. There are many events that now feature cornhole games.  Even if you are new to cornhole, you can easily find places and people who are ready to teach and play. So go play, have fun, and keep your brain in shape.
